| Welcome to Goodeids.com!
Goodeids.com is the premier website for all things Goodeid (Goodeidae)! Sources for fish, photo galleries, expert advice on care and breeding, discussion forums, Free Classifieds and much more!
The goal of Goodeids.com is to:
1. Bring the scattered, sometimes hard to find Goodeidae information into one central location;
2. Operate a Forum so all hobbyists that keep these rare and endangered species can trade ideas and personal hands on information;
3. Operate a Goodeid Species Maintenance Program (GSMP), in which all hobbyists with goodeids can log species kept, spawning information, and location of the hobbyist. The GSMP will give a better understanding of how secure each goodeid is within the hobby, and allow additional programs to be setup by its members to better circulate the more rare species.
What is the cost? The programs are all free thanks to the Benefactors of The Goodeidae Foundation!

A la pesca. (Gone fishin'.) Devin Biggs, 2007
This Weblog, the title of which translates roughly as "gone fishin'", describes a series of fishing excursions that I took to streams in the Ayuquila/Armería watershed during a three-week trip to Western Mexico. I was based in the town of Autlán, Jalisco during my visit.

Coercive mating and gonopodium length in two populations of a livebearering toothcarp (Poecilia mexicana): do cave molly males have shorter gonopodia?
Martin Plath & Michael Tobler 2006
Male livebearering toothcarps (Poeciliidae) ue their gonopodium, a modified anal fin, to transfer sperm bundles (spermatozeugmata) into the female's gonoduct. There is a wide range of variation in the patterns of male behavior proceeding and accompanying copulations in poeciliid fishes. Males of some species, such as the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) may court females before they attempt to insert their gonopodium (HOUDE 1997), whereas males of other species never court, and the latter completely rely on coercive mating attempts ("sneak copulations", BISAZZA 1993, Poecilia Mexicana: Plath et al. 2003).

Reduction of a visually mediated association preference in the Cave molly (
Michael Tobler(1,2), Heike Burmeister(3), Ingo Schlup (2,3), Martin Plath
Poecilia mexicana, Poeciliidae, Teleostei) |
2006
Several studies have reported on the persistence of visually mediated social preferences, such as preferences of females to associate with certain types of males, in an eyed cave fish, the Cave molly (Poecilia mexicana). However, so far most studies have examined preferences which are apparently currently under selection, i.e., the preferences are expressed also in darkness. In this paper we examined female preferences for (1) conspecific females and (2) males without a parasite-induced color change (black spot disease, BSD). In both cases, selection on the persistence of the preference is not apparent. As predicted, surface-dwelling females preferred conspecific over heterospecific females, but this preference was not found in the Cave molly. However, we found no evidence for female preferences relative to BSD-infection of males. We discuss that BSD-resistance probably has a low indicator value, so that this trait appears to be of minor importance for female mate choice even in surface-dwelling mollies.

My Trip to the A.L.A. Convention 2007
By Herb Kinney
|
My A.L.A. convention adventure started Friday morning April 29th at about 7:30 A.M. when I started catching and bagging fish to take along.
By 4:00 P. M. Dave Hackenberg arrived to pick my son, Ryan, and I up. For us, it was a short drive (about two hours) with plenty of fish talk. We arrived shortly after 6:00 P.M., checked in, unloaded, and then set up the fish we brought for the show. Unfortunately, I missed the first guest speaker. I was in my room selling and trading fish. I got a nice group of Limia vattata.
